Mediocre just doesn’t cut it

From the Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Howard Newton once said, “People forget how fast you did a job – but they remember how well you did it.”

My brothers and I had an early morning paper route growing up and my twin always got his part of the route done the quickest.

My older brother and I decided to check up on his work one particular day and saw exactly why he was the fastest.

Papers were blowing down the street, strewn across lawns, and spilled on front porches, instead of neatly tucked into mailboxes.

Boy, did he ever hear it from my dad!

Sloppy work is the product of a mediocre effort.

The word mediocre literally means “halfway up a stony mountain.”

A mediocre job is a job done halfway, leaving you well short of the summit.

On the contrary, a competent person won’t settle for average.

They focus on doing a job well and carrying it out to completion.

They pay attention to detail and perform with consistency.

It means we sweat the small stuff sometimes, not as a control freak or a micromanager, but as one who makes sure stuff gets done and is done well.

Remember that the next time your boss asks you to do a task you don’t like, or your parents want you to clean your room.

Mediocrity just doesn’t cut it!
