Former Wallaceburg mayor dies

A former mayor of Wallaceburg, known as the “consummate politician,” has died.

Joseph Henry Taylor, of Wallaceburg, passed away on Saturday, September 5.

He was 88.

Taylor is survived by his wife Lenora, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

Taylor was very active in the community, with a political career spanning over three decades.

He was the mayor of Wallaceburg in 1976 and was also the Warden of Kent County.

“Fond memories of Joe as the consummate politician, he loved Wallaceburg and Wallaceburg loved him,” wrote Mari Cole on an online tribute.

“A fine, decent man who always had time for everyone who needed his help,” wrote Jim Blake. “Joe was first and foremost a man who genuinely cared about his community and the people he loved.”

“Joe was a pleasure to work with on Kent County Council,” wrote Lorna Graham. “He was always cheerful, dedicated, had a great sense of humour and stood up for his beliefs.”

A visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9 at the Cavanagh Funeral Home.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 10 at 2 p.m.
