What a luxury it is to sit down to a warm cup of tea in the mid-afternoon. The activity refreshes the body, calms the mind and lifts the spirit. Anna, the wife of the seventh Duke of Bedford, understood this well.
Around the year 1650, it was the custom to plan only two meals during the day: a hearty breakfast and a late evening dinner. Anna in an effort to ease the sinking feeling during the day, began instructing her servants to prepare tea and cakes in the late afternoon. Tea was considered to be a health beverage that, among other things, could restore energy and cure minor ills.
Thus began a fashionable activity in mid-afternoon which still exists today.
