The inaugural Pumpkinfest being held by the Wallaceburg Kinsmen Club is set to keep families busy from morning until night on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Eric Hancock, the Wallaceburg Kinsmen president and the event organizer, said the event is at the Kinsmen Centre on Dufferin Avenue and is all behind the building.
“We have got about 50,000 square feet we can use,” he said. “The day will start off with a pancake breakfast by the Knox Presbyterian Church group. They will be serving breakfast from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. It is $5 for breakfast. Then at the same time we are going to have a kids zone open up. The kids zone we are going to have a large blow up obstacle course. We are going to have a slide, face painting, pumpkin decorating and balloons. Something for the kids to do during the day to keep them entertained.”
Eric said the group is hoping to get a large 1,000 lbs. pumpkin on display as well.
“It would be great to see their eyes when they see a 1,000 lbs. pumpkin that’s bigger than them,” he said. “We are hoping to have a pumpkin that the kids can stand next to and get their picture taken. We are crossing our fingers that is going to happen. I’m sure the Growers and Throwers will come up with something.”
Eric said the actual competition will start at 11 a.m. and that’s when the food vendors come in.
“We have got pizza coming in, a fry wagon, lemonade stand run by the Wallaceburg District Secondary School girls basketball team. They get the proceeds off that. We have got cotton candy and we have a BBQ going on for the day,” he said.
“Also starting at 10 am we have a craft fair going on. We have right now 34 vendors signed up. That’s will be in the bingo hall. We have got vendors form Sarnia, Windsor, London that are coming in for the day.”
Eric added: “Admission for this is free. You are going to pay for your food and beverages. The kids zone and the craft fair is free. We will be accepting donations because this event, our budget is to spend about $20,000. So it is a costly thing for us to run. So we will have some people who want to make a donation for next year so we can afford to do this again.”
In the evening, Dan Knight form Dresden is coming in for the night to provide entertainment.
“Again there is no charge for that. That will run until about midnight.”
