Shame on you for ‘fat shaming’

From the Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

There is a common thread running across most social media sites these days which is being commonly referred to as ‘fat shaming.’

For what it is worth, I would like to ‘weigh-in’ on this touchy trend.

Basically, people are taking to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube airing their strong opinions about people who are battling obesity. It is not just a matter of bringing the subject up for constructive conversation, though.

Instead, it is a war of words with the not-so-plump firing scathing criticism at those who are.

The aim is to get those who are obese to do something about it before it is too late.

Those with their fingers on the social media trigger are using demeaning, derogatory language to ‘shame’ the so-called perpetrators into action.

The whole approach reeks of self-righteousness.

Although it is admirable, and even beneficial, to address the issue of obesity, in the case of fat shaming, the end clearly does not justify the means.

I didn’t do better in school because my parents called me an idiot.

I improved because they encouraged me to work harder and also did their part to assist me in my quest.

A compassionate, encouraging approach will go a lot further than the ‘in-your-face’ brashness spewing over social media.

I would even add one more important step.

Pray for that one who needs help.

The Lord knows our needs and is there to help if we will cry out to Him.

Even Jesus referred to Judas as ‘friend.’

Surely we can learn from that!
