Rotary Foundation honours Wallaceburg Rotarians

Special to the Sydenham Current

At the Rotary Club of Wallaceburg meeting on November 12, 2015, the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International honoured two local Rotarians for dedicated and unselfish service to the Rotary Club of Wallaceburg and Rotary International.

Don Jackson, member of the Rotary Club of Blenheim and past Assistant District Governor, awarded Paul Harris Fellowships to Past-President William Arends and President Sussan Londry, and presented them with Paul Harris medals, pins and certificates: “In appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among people of the world.”

Jay Eastman, representing the Rotary Foundation also participated in the program.

William Arends served as President for three terms and Sussan Londry is presently in her second term as President of the Rotary Club of Wallaceburg.

Paul P. Harris was the founder of Rotary International in 1905, now the world’s largest service organization with more than 1.2 million Rotarians in 32,000 Rotary Clubs, in over 200 countries and geographical areas.

Rotary International’s largest program, started in 1985, is Polio Plus, the eradication of polio worldwide. With the assistance of numerous donors, Rotary’s inoculation program has eradicated the crippling disease from all but two countries, and is very close to eradicating polio completely. Other major areas of focus include providing clean drinking water in many developing countries, education and literacy programs, maternal and child health and many other services.
