Change the world by your example, not your opinion

It was Paulo Coelho who once said, “The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.”

Here we are, just a few days away from embarking on yet another New Year, with a fresh supply of opportunity and adventure lying before us.

We come to a proverbial fork in the road.

We can either sit on Facebook or Twitter and post opinions about all that is wrong with the world, or we can decide things will be different this year.

Instead of armchair quarterbacking from the safety of our phone, we could actually get up and volunteer for an organization that is in desperate need of help.

Instead of criticizing the sermon, try living it.

Instead of griping about the high cost of groceries, take a moment to pause and give thanks before your meal.

Instead of gossiping about the woman with the dirty, bratty kids, organize a work team to go and clean her house.

We’re all experts at diagnosing other peoples’ problems but change can only come when we decide to do something about helping those people with their problems.

When we talk about how great it would be to buy the guy behind me in the drive-thru a coffee, we smile and say, “That’s cool!” But, when we actually buy the guy that coffee, it often leads to more coffees being bought for other people in the drive-thru.

The world can be changed by our example, sometimes one coffee at a time!
