On January 9, 2016, Chatham-Kent Police received several inquiries about a Facebook post with third party information, indicating that there was an attempted child abduction at a business located on St Clair St. in Chatham.
Police officials stated they are not currently investigating, nor did they receive such a complaint of an attempted child abduction.
This was simply a rumour, and like anything posted on social media, discretion should be used accordingly,” police officials stated.
Chatham-Kent Police reminds its citizens that if a false complaint is made to purposely mislead police and misuse resources for a fabricated incident, that person may be charged criminally with public mischief and held accountable before the courts.
The maximum punishment for such an offence is imprisonment for a term of five years.
