American politics has hit a new low and it’s scary

By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current

I’ve always been political.

And… I’ve ALWAYS watched the United States political scene very closely, because it does affect us here.

I’ve seen the worst of times, as the saying goes… the slave owners (George Washington and others), the liars and the cheats (aka. Tricky Dick Nixon), the morons (aka. George Bush), the philanderers (aka JFK and Clinton)… they even elected (TWICE!) a man whose claim to fame was acting in movies with a chimp (aka. Ronnie Raygun and Bonzo).

However… I do think that American politics has hit a new low.

Sure, they’ve had those who tried to buy their way into the White House before. Anyone remember Ross Perot?

But now… NOW, they have the “Buffoon with Bucks” as I like to call him, (aka. Donald Trump).

He wants to build more border fences, is an obvious racist, hates Muslims, wants to spend huge amounts of money on “security”, promotes racial profiling, and is against ANYTHING that even resembles diversity.

We all KNOW that he’ll spend huge amounts on military projects, will be even more aggressive militarily than anyone can imagine, while destabilizing any progress on social programs that have been established over the years.

His version of “attack ads”, which we all know here, thanks to Stephen Harper and the Canadian Progressive Conservatives, have already started, and their election isn’t for another 10 months!

The previously mentioned Presidents have worried me… but Trump frankly SCARES me.

Two concerns are paramount:

1. He’s actually LEADING in the polls on the Republican side.

2. He actually might get in!

Remember, though, this is the man who actually said, when he announced his candidacy, – “When Mexico sends its people… they are bringing drugs and they are bringing crime and their rapists.”

He’s also the man who has forgotten, as have so many Americans, the quote from, of all people, Benjamin Franklin – “Those who would sacrifice freedom for security – deserve neither, and will lose both.”

It’s going to be very interesting… but scary.

  1. I rather doubt that Trump will be chosen as the GOP candidate going into the actual election. What I find troubling is that there’s a segment of American GOP supporters who are bigotted, racist, and politically ignorant of the facts. The Norman Rockwell America they espouse doesn’t exist anymore………but their nuclear arsenal still does.

  2. While I don’t claim to have been around at the time of the slave owners, I have followed American politics closely for many years, since I have family there. So kindly allow me a moment to respond to Mr. Turner’s latest polemic against rationality with a few simple comments.

The left-wing viewpoint comes as no surprise to me, since Canada has unfortunately elected a Prime Minister who’s sole claim to fame is that he was born with a famous name, and who’s sole qualification for the office he holds is that same name. However, that doesn’t mean that common sense should disappear completely from this nation’s psyche.

Mr. Turner claims to have followed American politics for the nation’s entire history. Hyperbole, but let us grant that he has followed their political machinations for several decades, as have I. If this is the case, then he would know that ‘attack ads’ of a vitriolic nature have been a staple of politics for that nation’s entire history. He would also know that American elections Presidential election cycles begin about ten minutes after the polls close on the previous mid-term election (in this case, 2014). Ten months out from the last two elections (which gave America Jimmy Carter’s replacement as the worst president ever), both parties had been spending millions of dollars on attack ads, trashing their rivals for the nomination and their political enemies. Paul Ryan pushing Grandma over the cliff, remember?

I am an unabashed Trump supporter, and I came by it honestly. Not because I am, as people like Mr. Turner would suggest, a bigot, racist, homophobe, sexist, and whatever the latest insult-du-jour from the rabid left may be. I support Donald Trump because unlike Mr. Turner, I have actually listened to what he says, read his policy positions, and paid attention to what is actually happening in the United States. The economy has been flushed down the proverbial toilet, special interest donors control both parties in Congress, illegal aliens are flooding the southern border, bringing potential terrorists and outright criminals into the country with absolute impunity, and the man in the Oval Office has put the Constitution through the shredder.

Mr. Turner has decided to throw nasty insults at men like George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan, neither of whom was perfect, but both were infinitely better choices than their electoral opponents (one of whom could not even carry his own state in the election). Reagan kickstarted a moribund economy in the 1980s after Jimmy Carter basically threw in the towel and said ‘America is on the downswing now, and it won’t get better.’ Reagan said ‘Yes it will,’ and he was right. Barack Obama, along with every presidential candidate except one, has said the same thing that Carter said. The lone voice of dissent? Donald Trump.

Donald Trump remembers what most politicians of today have forgotten: he is supposed to serve, not rule. He is financing his own campaign…and has spent less money than any other candidate. He has consistently led in the polls since June, for one simple reason: people agree with him, and it’s not the fringe. It is the vast majority that has seen politicians ignore their concerns for decades because of the political donor class. It is the vast majority that has seen their economic prospects plummet while millions of people enter the country illegally and steal their jobs and drain the public coffers. It is the vast majority that has realized that their leaders truly no longer care about the welfare of the people who are the backbone of the nation’s economy, an economy that dominated the world less than one hundred and fifty years after the nation’s founding.

Here’s another point that Mr. Turner has failed to grasp: Trump is right about everything he’s saying, and he has been proven right by a hostile media that has sought to destroy him since he announced his candidacy. Despite their best efforts, they have been forced to recognize that tens of thousand of illegals are murdering, raping, assaulting, robbing, etc. The nation’s veterans are being horrendously maltreated, particularly in the medical field: they wait longer for care than we do here in Canada, which is a frightening thought. Meanwhile, those same illegal aliens are getting welfare, government education grants, and medical insurance paid for by taxpayers. And as for the Muslim issue, two points. First, ‘Muslim’ is not a race, it’s a political belief system disguised as a religion. Second, ask the people of Germany how they feel about all the Syrian refugees coming in and raping their women on New Year’s Eve and demanding government benefits. No wonder the American people are angry! They know very well that their leaders have sold them out, and they have had enough. And the Constitution is not a suicide pact; America is under no obligation to allow ANYONE to enter their country, much less people who have well-publicized ill intent towards America and its liberty.

Benjamin Franklin said many things. Here’s one: “I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion about the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it.” There’s only one candidate running for President who would agree with that; the rest, by their own actions, have proven otherwise. Along the same lines, try this: “In my youth, I traveled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.” Here’s another one: “Even peace may be purchased at too high a price.” What price is the current regime willing to pay for peace? Nuclear weapons in Iran? How long will peace last then?

And finally, I have to laugh at the constant referral to Donald Trump as a ‘buffoon’ or a ‘clown’ or an idiot. The man is a multi-billionaire, and no buffoon, clown or idiot could accomplish that, particularly in the New York real estate market. He has demonstrated throughout his life, and throughout his campaign, that he is a man of energy. His flaws and faults have been front-page news in the media for four decades. He has never pretended to be something he is not, and his children have spoken highly of him as a parent. Compare Ivanka Trump to Chelsea Clinton, and tell me which of them is a better reflection on their parentage.

I would go on, but a complete and proper rebuttal to Mr. Turner’s tantrum would take up enough bandwidth to fry WIkipedia. So I will end with this: It is a political axiom that ‘Liberals always tell you who they fear.” Well, Mr. Turner is right to be afraid, because Donald Trump is going to win the presidency in a landslide that will remind people of the man Mr. Turner calls “Ronnie Raygun” and “Bonzo,” and he will indeed make America a great nation again, the greatest the world has ever seen. He will do so for one simple reason: the American people are firmly behind him because he stands with them with equal firmness. And unlike Mr. Turner’s idols on the left, they don’t care (and neither does Trump) about what the rest of the world thinks of them. They are Americans, and they are proud to be so. Now they want their country to be something to be proud of, and Donald Trump is their chosen champion.
