Experiencing pregnancy and the birth of a child can be a very happy and exciting time in a woman’s life, but for some women, it can be a time of great sadness and anxiety.

Although the term “Postpartum Depression” is often used, depression and anxiety can also occur during pregnancy.

“Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders” is the new expression used to describe mood disorders that occur any time during pregnancy or in the first year after the baby is born. Any woman can experience a Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder.

It is very common to experience the “Baby Blues” after the birth or adoption of a child. This typically happens as a woman adjusts to the physical, emotional and social changes in her life.

Adjusting to new roles and relationships are not always easy.

It is estimated that 4 out of 5 women will experience the Baby Blues.

Symptoms include feelings of sadness, tearfulness, irritability, changes in sleeping patterns and feeling overwhelmed. The Blues are temporary and will pass within a few days or within a few weeks.

It is important that mothers take care of themselves during this time and use the supports available to them.

Women who experience symptoms that last longer than 2 weeks during pregnancy or after the birth of a child need to speak with their Health Care Provider. Symptoms of a Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders may include:

– Being sad and tearful

– Exhausted but unable to sleep

– Changes in eating or sleeping patterns

– Feeling overwhelmed

– No interest or pleasure in activities that used to enjoy

– Feeling restless, irritable or angry

– Feel guilty and ashamed thinking they are not a good mother

– Afraid to be alone with the baby
