OPP: Multiple cars in the ditch

opp1

Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers are currently responding to approximately six vehicles that went off the road into the ditch and median on Highway 401, in both directions, between Bloomfield Road and Orford Road since 4:30 a.m. this morning.

The number is expected to climb as the day progresses.

We ask the public to be cautious as Emergency crews are on the highway actively assisting motorists out of their vehicles to safety.

Snowplows are out as well clearing snow from the roadway.

Please keep a safe distance back, do not try to pass a snowplow, and give them room to do their job.

Highway 401 is reported to be covered with packed snow and icy sections.

Visibility is less than one kilometre, with snow and blowing snow.

Snowfall is expected to last into this afternoon, so please slow down, stay alert and stay in control.

There may be traffic slowdowns, single lane closures and full lanes closures periodically throughout the day as officers continue to attend at vehicles that have gone off the road.
