The future of Wallaceburg’s water source will be known today.
The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is holding a special meeting at the Wallaceburg Municipal Centre from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (March 2).
After a two-year-long environmental assessment process, PUC staff have announced their “preferred solution” is stay with the status quo and rehabilitate the Wallaceburg Water Treatment Plant.
Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley, who sits on the PUC, said he plans on making a motion to support the recommendation.
“This has been an issue that Carmen (McGregor) and I have worked on since December 2014 and with a positive vote today all the work will have been worth it,” Wesley told the Sydenham Current.
“None of this could happen without the tremendous community support we received, which for those of us from Wallaceburg, is nothing new.”
Wesley said he is happy the PUC agreed to hold this meeting in Wallaceburg.
“Whenever there is a major decision affecting a local community it should take place in the local community where possible,” he said. “Carmen and I have reached out to every member of the Commission and we feel positive about that, but we take nothing for granted until the votes are counted.”
Wesley added the support and feedback from the community has been great.
“The public support and response for this decision has been fantastic and the community of Wallaceburg and North Kent deserve a lot of credit for caring and taking the time to express their feelings… this is how government should work,” he said.
“Study the issue, ask for community input, listen to the community input and then work to deliver what the community wants.”
The 3 p.m. meeting is open to the public.
