Baseball coaches needed on Walpole Island

With spring right around the corner, Walpole Minor Baseball is looking for some coaches and assistants for the upcoming ball season.

“You have to be willing to commit, your time and efforts throughout the summer, games and practices,” said Lee Jacobs, a long-time volunteer coach on the First Nation reserve.

“You don’t have to be a MLB coach or be an all-star ball player to coach a team. You just need to know some basics of the game, and have the patience and determination, to show our kids what fair play and sportsmanship is all about. ”

Jacobs said last season they had approximately 150 kids playing ball, and he thinks there would have been more if there were enough coaches.

“It’s very cool to see our diamonds, which were recently improved, to be packed with cars and fans,” he said.

“From what I’ve seen in the past, we have a lot of talented ball players who deserve the opportunity to play. I look forward to the upcoming season, and also looking forward to working with potential coaches, watching our teams and kids grow into great ball teams and players. Ball season is right around the corner.”

A registration day for players is in the works, Jacobs said.

Anyone interested in coaching can call Jacobs at 519-627-4166.
