The Wallaceburg Lakers are set to introduce their new owners this coming week.

“Public announcement for all the curious people of Wallaceburg and surrounding area,” the Great Lakes Junior ‘C’ Hockey League team posted on social media.

“The group of investors who recently acquired the rights to the Wallaceburg Lakers and President, Jim McCrea will be holding a press release on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 2 p.m. (at) the Wallaceburg Legion. All are welcome to attend this event.”

McCrea said last month that the team would be receiving a financial boost.

“I have been working for sometime now trying to get financial assistance for our team so it can be competitive in the league,” said Jim McCrea, president of the team, in an e-mail.

After a vote on March 26, the Lakers accepted an offer from a group of investors who will guarantee the Lakers stay in Wallaceburg for a minimum of 10 years, McCrea said.

“They have agreed to pay off all past debts and infuse a great deal of money to help run a team that will be much better than we have seen in the past few years when we struggled with debt and could not even meet the basic needs to be able to attract quality players to our centre,” he said.

“In this time of factories closing, schools closing, it is very tough for this town to receive enough sponsor moneys to survive. I and all the executive have and will do whatever (is) needed to keep the Lakers in this town and make a team we can all be proud of.”

The Great Lakes Junior ‘C’ Hockey League League team has struggled in recent years, missing the playoffs for five consecutive seasons.

Wallaceburg finished last in the league in 2015/2016, finishing with a 3-37-0 record.
