A Wallaceburg musical group earned a gold medal at the recent Kiwanis Music Festival in Chatham, and they will now be heading to provincials.

The ‘Strings Are The Things Orchestra’- which is comprised of students from Wallaceburg’s three Catholic schools and from UCC – earned a score of 88 from the adjudicator when they performed on April 12.

Their performance was noted as being “very musical and powerful.”

The after school orchestra has been recommended to move on to the provincial festival for the fourth year in a row.

Under the direction of Jennifer Trinca, Chatham Kent’s After School Orchestra Program was founded in 2011 on the premise that all children, regardless of their socioeconomic and cultural background, should have access to a quality, authentic music education program.

As recipients of a MusiCounts Grant and a Chatham-Kent Community Partnership Grant, students have access to quality string instruments for practice and performance.

Students receive instruction after school for two hours each week for the duration of the entire school year.

“Chatham-Kent’s After School Orchestra program has the potential to be transformational and impact hundreds of young people in our Catholic School community,” Trinca stated.

“The program is intended to give all students the chance to discover their talent, empowering them with skills that will help them excel both in the classroom and beyond.”
