Entegrus: Copper thieves ‘run the risk of death’

Entegrus is looking to the community to report suspicious activity around the company’s substations after a recent rash of break-ins where thieves are looking for copper.

“What thieves don’t know, is that Entegrus no longer uses copper wire in its substations,” stated Jim Hogan, President and CEO of Entegrus Inc.

“Rather, we use ‘copper clad’ which is basically worthless.”

The company is requesting that if any members of the public notice any suspicious persons, vehicles or equipment in the vicinity of the Entegrus substations in Chatham or Strathroy to contact local police immediately.

“When thieves enter our substations, they run the risk of death when tampering with high voltage equipment,” continued Hogan. “Once someone has broken in, not only are they risking a serious or fatal injury, but it also puts the public, our employees, and first responders at risk as well.”

Entegrus continues to take steps to increase the security of its substations, including the recent installation of cameras, new locks and barred windows. The company appreciates the assistance of local police and members of the community who report suspicious behaviour.
