Vera Mae Hastings, on Sunday April 24th in her 93rd year, Mom’s life on earth ended and she joined Dad for eternity. Born in Chatham Township to Robert and Mary Hinds, Mom saw and experienced so much during her lifetime. Like others of the Greatest Generation she endured the Great Depression, witnessed one of the most horrific conflicts known to mankind and persevered to find love and happiness. Mom married the love of her life, with him created their own home, raised a son and after all was said and done shared a long and happy retirement enjoying all the pleasures life has to offer. Dad and Mom laughed together, cried together and through 70 years of marriage until his passing were never apart. Finally now they are together again.
Mom first and foremost was a wife, homemaker and mother but also had several jobs outside of the home during her lifetime. She worked in a munitions factory during the war and was one of the “Bond Room Girls”…she worked as a sales lady at Lemac Gift Store, was a cashier at Gordons Super Market and in her final working years was a regular fixture behind the counter at Durfy’s Bakery (a “Bismarck ” always came home for us when she was done work).
Mom was predeceased by her parents Robert and Mary Hinds, her husband Arthur, sister Margaret and her husband Albert (Burt) Murphy, Mother in law Electra Hastings, Brothers and Sisters in law Robert and Agnes Hastings, Vernon and Eleanor Craig as well as Sister in law Jean White. Mom was also predeceased by her and Dad’s dearest friends Jack and Betty Pearce….two people who shared so many camping memories and whose friendship meant so very much to them.
Vera is survived by her son Drew Hastings and his wife Katherine of Albion, Indiana, Grandson Robert (Rob) Hastings of Wallaceburg, Granddaughters Jennifer (Todd) Henderson, Mary (Brett) Keelean and Ellen (Doug) Bolen as well as 10 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild to be born in May all of Albion, Indiana.
A private family graveside service will take place at a later date. In remembrance donations may be made at the funeral home to a charity of your choice.
To those who cared for Mom, were her friends, visited her, helped her or just inquired and cared about her wellbeing we sincerely appreciate all that you did for her and brought into her life…..
In the words of the wonderful comedian Red Skelton who Mom loved…. “May God Bless”.
