The Wallaceburg – Walpole Island First Nation Health Coalition is taking part in a province-wide referendum, calling for a halt to hospital cuts.

Shirley Roebuck, chair of the local group, told the Sydenham Current the Ontario Health Coalition is is leading the charge across the province.

“It is running right now through to the end of May,” Roebuck said.

“The Wallaceburg and Walpole Island First Nations Health Coalition is participating as is the Chatham-Kent Coalition. We are having numerous advance polls in private businesses throughout the month of May.”

Roebuck said the campaign will cumulate with a public referendum on May 28, when they will be in local businesses asking for people’s votes.

“There is only going to be one question on this ballot… that is ‘if people think that hospital cuts are good for their home communities or whether they would like to see hospital cuts stopped and proper hospital funding restored,'” she said.

“The aim of this campaign is to get the Provincial government’s attention about how many people do not like hospital cuts and how they want to receive health care services in their own local communities and how they want their hospital to be properly funded. We are hoping to get hundreds of thousands of votes province-wide in order to send them to Ms. *Kathleen) Wynne in the Ontario Legislature.”

Roebuck said the Wallaceburg and Walpole Island First Nations Health Coalition is looking for volunteers.

“We are looking for more volunteers to help us with these advance polls and on referendum day May 28,” she said.

“Any kids in high school that are in need of volunteer hours, this would be a perfect project for them.”
