Dumpster fire leads to arson charge

This morning around 12:20 a.m. an officer on general patrol observed the man walking in the area King Street West.

All of a sudden the officer observed a flame arise from a large construction dumpster in which the man was in close proximity.

The officer stopped and placed the man under arrest, however he failed to comply with his demands.

The man resisted arrest, however eventually complied and was apprehended.

Upon being searched incident to arrest, the man was found to be in possession of two Bic lighters.

The Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services attended to extinguish the blaze.

Due to the quick response of all emergency personnel, a near-by pick-up truck and surrounding businesses were not damaged.

Through investigation, police further learned that the man was also wanted for failing to comply with release conditions.

The 36-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with arson and resisting a peace officer.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
