A student in Chatham has been charged for stealing his teacher’s car.

Police officials say yesterday afternoon around 1:45 p.m. the youth removed a set of keys from his teacher’s purse.

Police say the youth didn’t know which car was hers so he hid behind a tree and watched as she approached her vehicle in the parking lot.

When the teacher believed she left her keys in the classroom, she re-entered the school.

At this time, the youth entered her car and drove away.

Luckily, he was quickly stopped at the end of the street by school officials and police were called.

The 12-year-old Chatham youth was arrested and charged with theft of motor vehicle.

There was no damage to the vehicle and no one was injured.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
