SDH motion ‘mischaracterized’ at council

A Wallaceburg councillor is not happy with the outcome of Monday’s referred motion about Wallaceburg’s hospital.

Coun. Jeff Wesley said the the intent of the motion, made by fellow Wallaceburg Coun. Carmen McGregor, was “completely mischaracterized” by Chatham Coun. Brock McGregor.

“The thing that burnt me the most was that the motion had nothing to do with ‘health information’ and the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance… what it asked for was economic and other non-health data that Chatham-Kent is the expert to provide. The information requested was fully within the expertise of C-K to provide. No different than if a major local industry were to close,” Wesley said.

Chatham Coun. Brock McGregor entered a successful motion to refer the request made by Carmen McGregor back to administration.

“I’m hesitant to dip our toes into this fray,” Brock McGregor said, (his full comments can be read here.)

The Chatham councilor’s motion to refer was approved by a vote of 9-8.

Wesley said he is upset that neither Carmen McGregor or himself were able to speak about the issue.

“Either Councillor Brock McGregor did not understand the motion, which I doubt, or he purposely mischaracterized it to get if referred and not discussed,” Wesley said.

“I am upset with his motion to refer because it did not allow me to speak… something I would never do to any other member of council.”

Wesley added: “Coun. Carmen McGregor and I are far from done here.”
