Sarnia Police Service officials allege: On Sunday May 19, 2024, at approximately 1:12 p.m. the Sarnia Police Service received a call of a vehicle becoming submerged in the Sarnia Bay.
The cause appears to be an accidental activation of the gas pedal instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to accelerate through the guard rail along the boardwalk and into the bay.
Two bystanders jumped into the water to help extricate the driver and passenger from the vehicle.
Both occupants were helped to shore by other citizens who arrived to help.
They were examined by Lambton EMS at the scene.
Although clearly shaken, they were fortunately not injured.
A local tow company was contacted to assist in removing the submerged vehicle from the water.
The Sarnia City Works department was contacted to assist with repairing the guard rail.
Investigation of the collision is ongoing, however no charges are anticipated having regard for circumstances and the location (not on a roadway).
The Sarnia Police thank all those who immediately took action to get everyone to safety.
