Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s Town Crier George Sims has been ringing the bell and sharing his message for the past 25 years as the official herald of the community.

The former elementary school vice-principal was named the former City of Chatham’s Town Crier in 1991 at the Festival of Nations. On Monday, July 11, Sims joined his fellow orators to celebrate International Town Crier Day, which is annually recognized on the second Monday in July.

“I have enjoyed being an ambassador for Chatham-Kent – one nice place to be,” said George Sims, Municipality of Chatham-Kent Town Crier.

Town Criers date back to the 18th century and were employed to deliver information and royal proclamations to residents in a public gathering space. Although the formal role of Town Criers has changed over the years, it has remained a ceremonial tradition in many communities, including Chatham-Kent. As the official Town Crier, Sims attend events across the Municipality, as well as represents the community in various cities across the province and internationally.

“We are grateful to George Sims for his commitment to the community and impassioned delivery of speeches at various events across the Municipality,” said Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope. “On International Town Crier Day, we want to celebrate his 25 years of service and recognize his ongoing commitment to our community.”
