Life’s precious ‘interruptions’

From the Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

A few weeks ago I was in Chatham for a lunch meeting.

It was just before the Canada Day holiday and I had a lot to get done in a shortened work week.

As I was leaving the meeting my wife texted me to do a couple of errands.

I grudgingly obliged, but now I was delayed.

Finally, as I was just about to get into my car to drive back to Wallaceburg my cell phone went off.

I almost didn’t answer it, but when I did my sister-in-law from Windsor was on the other end of the line.

She was asking me to go and visit her dying uncle in the hospital.

I left right away and got there to be with this family and pray with them before this man slipped away peacefully a short time after I arrived.

The family was so grateful and marveled at my ability to respond to their time of need in such a prompt manner.

Of course, I had nothing to do with it.

My plan was something entirely different, but the Lord knew something I didn’t and changed things up for me.

What I thought was a frustrating series of interruptions turned out to be a “God moment” for a family in need.

I would say this was a coincidence except that I have seen this sort of thing play out many times in my 30 years of pastoral ministry.

I want to encourage you today to be on the lookout for these “God moments” in your life.

They often come when we least expect it, and may even seem to be very inconvenient.

Nevertheless, if we are willing and able, God can use us to help others.
