The severe thunderstorm watch in Chatham-Kent ended at 3:04 p.m.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch in Chatham-Kent, while a heat warning continues as well.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Also, a heat episode will continue on today for many regions in Southern Ontario. Daytime temperatures will reach the low thirties with afternoon humidex values in the upper thirties.

This heat episode will come to an end tonight with the passage of a cold front.

Frequently visit neighbours, friends and older family members, especially those who are chronically ill, to make sure that they are cool and hydrated.

Never leave people or pets in your care inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight.

Prepare meals that don’t need to be cooked in your oven.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
