Josie Matteis Doto was a unique and caring individual who believed in giving and expecting nothing in return.

As an avid volunteer with United Way of Chatham-Kent, Josie dedicated herself to the community.

With her passing in 2015, the Matteis family partnered with Chatham-Kent Nonprofit Network and United Way of Chatham-Kent to establish the Josie Matteis Doto Bursary for Nonprofit Management.

Emily Mailhot has been announced as the first recipient of this $1,000 bursary.

Mailhot graduated from Tilbury District High School in 2015 and started her first year at Lambton College this September for the Social Service Worker Program. In the past four years Emily has given an astounding 325 volunteer hours all over Chatham-Kent.

Mailhot said her career goal is to become a volunteer coordinator/counselor.

“And help others understand how giving back to their community can benefit so many people as well as themselves,” she said.

Josie’s sister, Stephanie Matteis had the following to say about why they selected Emily.

“We were so impressed with her application and with the wonderful work she has already done in the nonprofit sector. Emily’s work, passion and skills are an inspiration,” she said.

Kim Broadbent, project co-ordinator of the Chatham-Kent Nonprofit Network supported the Matteis family by building the application process as well as promoting the Bursary.

“Chatham-Kent Nonprofit Network is working hard to connect with the youth in our community to teach them that a career in the nonprofit sector is one full of opportunities, outreach and heart,” she said.

“We are delighted to see that Emily will be the first recipient of the Josie Matteis Doto Bursary for Nonprofit Management. We received many applications and I know it was an extremely tough decision for the Matteis family to make. We look forward to see Emily’s career path continue to grow in a sector that she loves.”
