The investigation is on-going, and details remain scarce, after a fatal morning fire inside a second story apartment in Wallaceburg.

Members of Walpole Island First Nation and other neighbours from the area have maintained a vigil across the street from 126 Nelson Street throughout the day.

Chatham-Kent police officials say just before 4 a.m. this morning, emergency crews responded to the residential fire.

One person was found deceased in the apartment.

Reports say the building contains five single-occupant apartments.

Nelson Street between James Street and Wellington Street remains closed. Police officials are asking motorists to avoid the area.

Pedestrian traffic is able to access to businesses along the street.

Const. Renee Cowell told the Sydenham Current the Chatham-Kent Police Service is assisting the Ontario Fire Marshal and the Chatham-Kent Fire Department with the investigation.

The Chatham-Kent Fire Department has yet to release any details about the blaze.

Cowell said more information will be released when it becomes available.
