After grabbing a glass of water from our tap last week, I strolled through our home office, opened the front door, and grabbed the mail from our mailbox. Inside was a letter from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, entitled: Wallaceburg & Area Water Supply Review Municipal Class EA – Notice Of Study Completion.

As I read through the notice, I couldn’t help but think back to the long saga that took place in our community about its water source.

After the consultants initially stated their “preferred alternative” was to connect to Chatham’s water source, an evaluation committee was formed with councillors, members of the Wallaceburg BIA members, WATCH, the Chatham-Kent PUC and the consultants themselves, Stantec.

With the Wallaceburg Water Treatment Plant essentially on the chopping block, the results from the evaluation committee led to a new option: to rehabilitate the Wallaceburg site, utilizing the existing water intake in the Chenal Ecarte.

As part of the EA process, the findings are set to be available for a 30-day period for anyone to check out.

This final copy can be viewed here.

The final outcome of this project was not something I expected.

With the “preferred alternative” announced by the consultants, despite what the PUC and Stantec officials said, it seemed like a foregone conclusion about the outcome.

However, with determination, commitment, hard work, and a reliance on the full process… the tables turned, and the community got what it wanted.
