Rename our Alvinston Indians from High Road on Vimeo.
A neighbouring baseball organization is doing something many professional organizations have refused to do… change their name.
Alvinston Minor Ball has decided to scrap ‘Indians’ as their team name.
“Our teams have a proud tradition and have won many local and provincial championships as the ‘Indians’, but we’ve decided that teaching respect for each other, respect for opponents and respect for every community we visit is a far more important tradition than any name or logo,” states a GoFundMe page set up by the club.
“So, we are coming up with a new name and raising the money we need to replace our uniforms, equipment and ballpark signage. We’re proud that our small town teams are doing the right thing, when the MLB, NFL, CFL and NHL won’t. Any support you can provide will be hugely appreciated.”
The organization has yet to pick their new name, and they are taking feedback from the community to help decide.
“We will provide updates during the campaign as we get input and ideas from players, parents and supporters like you,” the organization stated. “We have lots of great options. Before we were the Indians, we were the Aces. Some families in our community have a long history as honey producers, so we could be the Buzz. Or maybe we could be the Jr. Jays.”
Hats off to Alvinston Minor Ball for taking a stand and teaching their children about respect.
Regardless of how you feel about the issue, it’s hard to argue with the organization for teaching love, respect and taking a positive grassroots spin on the topic.
So far the club has raised over $2,000 of their $29,000 goal, as they plan on replacing their jerseys, hats, equipment bags and ballpark signage for all their teams.
