Kings upset 73’s in OT

The Dresden Kings turned some heads on Tuesday night after topping the first place 73’s in Essex.

After being down 2-0 after one period, the Kings kept chipping away and eventually got on the board in the second period with a goal from Dillon Liberty.

Liberty wasn’t done there, as he scored 20 second into the third period to tie things up at 2-2.

Playing in his first game with Essex, former Wallaceburg Lakers forward Brayden Kettlewell scored for Essex at the 16:39 mark of the third giving them a 3-2 lead.

However, Kevin Ritzer would score the equalizer a couple minutes later at the 18:41 mark, sending the game the OT.

Ritzer was the hero in OT as well, scoring on a feed from Liberty just 44 second into the extra frame, giving the Kings a 4-3 victory.

Liberty and Ritzer both finished with 2 goals and 1 assist on the night.

Brendan Ritchie had 3 assists for Dresden, while Joel Sowinski made 45 saves for the win.

The Kings are now tied with Mooretown for 5th place in the Hobbs Division (15-17-1), while Essex remains on top (24-8-1 ).

Dresden hosts Petrolia on Friday, puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Lakers fall short against Wheatley

The Wallaceburg Lakers fell to the Wheatley Sharks on Monday night, by a score of 4-2.

The Lakers were down 4-0 ear;y in the third period, before Trevor Waller and Matt Farrugia scored, cutting the lead in half.

However, this was a close as Wallaceburg would get.

The Lakers have now lost 22 straight games.

Wallaceburg will face the only team they have beaten this year, the Petrolia Flyers, twice this week.

The Lakers will host the Flyers on Wednesday night, before heading to Petrolia on Thursday.

Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. on both nights.

The Sydenham Current’s 2016 Newsmaker of the year, Wallaceburg’s Seth Griffith is celebrating his 24th birthday today.

The Florida Panthers tweeted this earlier today to mark the occasion:

Griffith will hope to create his own birthday present on Wednesday night, by finding the back of the net.

Griffith and the Panthers will be at home this evening against the Winnipeg Jets.
