Wallaceburg Lakers Peewee girls hockey team capture silver medals

This past weekend, the Wallaceburg Lakers Peewee girls squad headed to the Woodstock area for a hockey tournament.

After the first round, Wallaceburg was first place in their pool, earning them a berth in the semi-final.

The semi-final took place at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday morning after a treacherous ride from their hotel in London to the game, which was in Embro.

The Lakers faced off against the Huron Heat, and Huron drew first blood scoring a goal about midway through the second period. The Lakers applied continuous pressure, but couldn’t get a goal until the dying moments of the third period, which sent the game to overtime.

A five minute, sudden death 3-on-3 OT ended with the score still tied. Each team selected three shooters for a shootout. In the end, the shootout took seven shooters before Wallaceburg came out on top.

The Lakers advanced to the championship game against Lambeth.

Lambeth scored in the first period. Wallaceburg battled back with lots of good chances, but were unable to score.

The final score was 1-0 for Lambeth, resulting in the Lakers taking home silver medals.
