Faced with a shortage of participants, the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets program in Wallaceburg is in jeopardy.

Gary Dubuque, one of the volunteers with the group, told the Sydenham Current they currently have 14 cadets signed up with the club.

However, 30 members are needed to keep this free, federally funded program running.

Dubuque said their annual review is in May, or early June, which will determine if the program will stay.

The program in Wallaceburg has been running since 1958 and takes place currently above the Post Office on the second floor.

“We do naval knowledge, seamanship, sailing, physical fitness, marksmanship, leadership, Canadian citizenship,” Dubuque said.

“The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets… it’s co-sponsored by the Department of National Defence and the Navy League of Canada.”

The program is for youth, boys and girls, ages 12-18, and they gather on Tuesday evenings.

“We always have room for more,” Dubuque said.
