The power of consistency

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I once heard a speaker sharing a message about the ups and downs of life.

She then made a statement that really grabbed my attention.

She said, “With consistency lies the power.”

I thought about that and then thought about people I knew who modelled consistency.

Ken Larabee, a man in my church, is one such person.

Ken is celebrating his 91st birthday today.

I have known Ken for over 24 years now and in that time I have witnessed a life of faithful Christian character and witness.

Ken was a founding member of the local Gideons chapter in our area more than 55 years ago.

There may be many in our community who received their first New Testament in grade 5 from the caring hands of this man.

Together with his first wife, Mary, they raised six daughters and now enjoys retirement living with his second wife, Phyllis.

He rarely misses church and can always be seen with a smile on his face and a Bible under his arm.

He hasn’t moved mountains or had any inventions patented, but he has lived a consistent life.

Hebrews 13:8 says this: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.”

So often we can feel like a failure or just that our life is insignificant because we have not accomplished some great feat.

I am not saying we shouldn’t aim high and set some great goals for ourselves, but in the midst of that endeavour, we should realize the tremendous value of moving steadily along.

The last time I checked, the people with the best set of teeth in their mouths were the ones who brushed every day.

Don’t bounce from one extreme to another.

Be content to grind it out day by day and you’ll have the results to show for it.

If you need proof, just ask Ken!
