Fire at Flamingo Motel causes $200,000 damage

A blaze at the Flamingo Motel in Chatham has caused $200,000 dollars in damage.

However, fire officials say the blaze is not considered suspicious.

Chatham firefighters responded to the blaze at 421 Grand Ave E. in Chatham at 5:45 p.m.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, due to extensive damage.

Firefighters were called to the fire “with reports of smoke coming from the building.

“Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes and rapidly extinguished the blaze. There was extensive damage to unit of origin, however firefighters contained the fire from spreading to other areas of the motel and surrounding units have minimal smoke damage,” Chatham-Kent fire officials stated in a press release.

“The fire originated in the sleeping area and the cause is not suspicions at this time.”

An ‘After the Fire – Reassurance Campaign’ is set to take place.

“Firefighters will be returning the area to visit residents, check smoke alarms, discuss fire safety planning and answer questions,” fire officials stated.

Approximately $400,000 worth of property was saved, fire officials said.
