An off-duty police officer helped bring a suspected thief into custody over the weekend.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say on February 12 a 25-year-old Chatham man was allegedly committing a crime spree in a strip plaza on St. Clair St. in Chatham.

The man was targeting multiple stores at the location for thefts and was eventually confronted by a store staff member.

The suspect fled with stolen merchandise on a stolen bike and the staff member was able to flag down an off-duty Chatham-Kent police officer.

The suspect was apprehended after a short distance and held until other police units could attend.

The suspect was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
