The Streetlight Conversion Project in Chatham-Kent has made its way to Wallaceburg.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent, in partnership with Entegrus Powerlines, has been undergoing a large scale streetlight conversion project.

Approximately 10,000 Cobra-head style streetlights in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent will be converted to new energy efficient LED lights.

Entegrus officials say not only will this conversion save money on electricity costs, but it also provides a higher quality of light with a longer life span and minimizes monthly maintenance costs.

The upgrade will take place in 2 Phases, with Phase 1 being completed in December.

Phase 1 involved the conversion of 6,500 streetlights in the following areas (Entegrus and Hydro One serviced territories are included): Chatham, Dresden, Mitchell’s Bay, Dover Centre, Thamesville, Blenheim, Grande Pointe, Wheatley, Rondeau, Erieau, Pain Court, Kent Bridge, Merlin, McKay’s Corners, Charing Cross and North Buxton.

Phase 2 of the project is currently underway in Wallaceburg, Morpeth, Tupperville, Tilbury, Bothwell, Highgate and Ridgetown.

Residents of Chatham-Kent can use this streetlight map to view existing and converted streetlights.

Existing streetlights are indicated with a grey dot. The dots on the map showing in green represent streetlights that have already been converted to LED.

Most of the streetlights in our neighbourhood got changed on Monday, and we noticed the difference when the sun went down, and the new lights came on.

We noticed the lights are brighter, but provide more of a spotlight effect, projecting the light downward onto the road.

Our family kept thinking a car was pulling into out driveway when we were looking out our window.

We also noticed that our back porch was much darker than before, as the former orange Cobra-head style streetlight in our yard would illuminate further out and light up our whole back yard.

While the project is apparently saving money overall on electricity costs… as a homeowner myself, I will need to look further into lighting options for my property as a direct result.

What do you think about the project?
