The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) says minor flooding is anticipated for the Sydenham River in some low-lying areas.
SCRCA officials say 25 and 35 mm of rainfall fell in a recent 36 hour span and this has resulted in fast flowing water, slippery banks and top of bank water levels on local watercourses.
“Rainfall in the last 36 hours has kept streams and rivers in the Sydenham River watershed elevated,” SCRCA officials stated.
“Water levels continue to remain high resulting in over-bank flooding into floodplain areas. Water levels are expected to peak over the next six to 12 hours in the East Sydenham River at Dresden and peak in Bear Creek at Brigden by this afternoon. This will increase the potential for water levels to remain over the top of bank in many flood prone areas. Localized flooding will continue to expand into low lying areas, mostly agricultural floodplain and parkland areas.”
SCRCA officials say while flooding is anticipated to be minor in nature, traditional floodplain areas may become inundated with water over the next few days.
“The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories should flood issues arise,” SCRCA officials stated.
“Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks, cold and swift moving water. Parents in particular are urged to keep their children away from floodplain areas. The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority will monitor the flood condition of the watersheds in the region and will provide warnings to municipal officials and media in the event conditions develop which could result in the potential of flooding.”
The alert will remain in effect until Friday March 3.
