Wallaceburg soccer field fence damaged

A fence surrounding Perry Park in Wallaceburg, which hosts hundreds of children each summer for Wallaceburg Minor Soccer, was damaged sometime this week.

It appears at the scene, which is located between Gillard Street and Lowe Avenue behind Walmart in Wallaceburg, that a vehicle plowed through a portion of the fence, drove through the field and exited back through a separate portion of the fence.

Dan Vancoillie, a member of the Wallaceburg Minor Soccer Association executive, told the Sydenham Current the incident happened a couple of days ago.

“This is where we always play for the summer,” he said, adding the group has experienced damage to portable washrooms at the site and ATV’s driving on the field in the past.

“There is not much we can do… we’re going to have to pay for it now.”

Vancoillie said the soccer group has contacted the Chatham-Kent Police Service and Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers to look into the incident.

Vancoillie said he did not know how much money it would cost the group to fix the fence.

Police officials say damage was caused to about 40 feet of the chain linked fencing, and it does appear that the fence was driven over.

Police said no damage was caused to the field, besides some tire tracks.
