The Knights of Pythias group has once again donated some funds to the Special Olympics.

The Wallaceburg group recently handed over a $2,000 cheque to the local branch of the organization.

And although no Chatham-Kent athletes will be participating in the Peel 2017 Provincial Summer Games, which begin on July 13, the money will go a long way for the local Special Olympics group.

“It helps to pay for our facilities,” said Beatrice Stacey, the group’s coordinator.

“We do floor hockey at the W.I.S.H. Centre in Chatham. It pays for that. We do swimming at the Y.M.C.A. We have some travel costs, so it pays for our travel.”

Members of the local K of P group have been volunteering at the Special Olympics event in Michigan for many years, and a delegation is planning on going up to the Peel region in July to help out there as well.

“For me it was a mind changing experience,” said Charles Masefield, the Grand Chandler of Michigan and a local K of P member.

“I had never been involved in anything like that. When I talk about it at different events I usually get (emotional) because it was so great. If everybody could be pure athletes and never care if they won or lost, and just play the game. They are all like that, and it’s beautiful.”
