A Wallaceburg man faces a string of charges after allegedly going on a mini-shopping spree with the contents of a stolen wallet.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say yesterday morning around 7 a.m. a man allegedly walked onto a residential property on John Street in Wallaceburg.

He apparently entered a vehicle parked within the drive-way at that location and stole a wallet from the vehicle.

Inside the wallet was the owner’s identification and credit cards.

Police say at approximately 7:30 a.m. the same man attended Mac’s Milk located at 55 McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg.

He allegedly purchased two packages of Canadian Classic cigarettes, valued at $26.89, using a debit card from the wallet he had just stolen.

Just before 8 a.m. the man used the same card to purchase two disposable vape cigarettes valued at $11.28, police say.

Then, around 9:30 a.m. the man allegedly went just down the street to the Canadian Tire located at 74 McNaughton Avenue.

He attempted to use the same debit card to purchase one Nestea beverage and a self-lighting torch kit, total value of $32.50, police officials said.

However, this time the ‘tap’ feature on the debit card did not work.

So, the man allegedly pulled out a Canadian Tire MasterCard from the stolen wallet to pay for the items.

It was at this time that the employee observed the signature on the back of the MasterCard.

The person’s name (signature) on the back of the card is known to the employee and the man using the card was not, police officials said.

The employee called the police and the man left the store.

Police located the man within the area of the Canadian Tire store and he was arrested at 9:33 a.m.

A 28-year-old Wallaceburg man was charged with:

– Theft Under $5,000

– Possession of Property Obtained by a Crime Under $5,000

– Use of Stolen Credit Card x 2

He was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters and later released with a court date of Friday, May 5, 2017
