Communities across the province celebrated Doctors’ Day on Monday by recognizing the significant contributions doctors make to the healthcare system. Every day, doctors care for more than 320,000 patients; they also conduct research, teach medical students and lead programs to improve the delivery of healthcare.
At CKHA, approximately 185 physicians practice at both the Chatham and Sydenham Campuses and cover a variety of specialties from Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynaecology, to Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory Services.
Many of the organization’s physicians also offer their expertise and mentorship through teaching affiliations with the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario.
“We are honoured to recognize our physicians today for their dedication to the profession and the strong leadership roles they play within our organization,” stated Lori Marshall, President and CEO, in a press release. “They always strive to deliver safe, high quality care with compassion to our patients and their families.”
Building on last year’s success, to celebrate 2017 Doctors’ Day the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) put kids in charge of recognizing the province’s 29,000 practicing doc¬tors. School-age children are using colour and creativity to express “What my MD means to me…” Thousands of colouring sheets have been collected from across the province and shared on social media with the hashtag #LoveMyMD. Hearing from young patients on Doctors’ Day offers a meaningful and thoughtful outlet to celebrate the day.
May 1st was recognized by the provincial government in 2011 as the official day of appreciation for Ontario’s medical profession. The date was chosen to mark the birthday of one of Canada’s first female physicians, Dr. Emily Stowe.
