Minor earthquake recorded near Wheatley

A minor earthquake was recorded north of Wheatley this weekend.

The United States Geological Survey says a 2.2 magnitude earthquake occurred on Saturday at 9:50 p.m.

The epicenter was 5km below the surface near Essex Road 8 and Wheatley Road (42.165°N 82.468°W).

The Ontario Tornado Watch group said they had some reports from Leamington of houses shaking and loud noises.

“Sounded like thunder and house shook a bit,” Mary Siddall said on Facebook.

“Our sons dog reacted to it but it was very quick here in Wheatley.”

Tim Nantais said he thinks his dog felt it.

“She acted weird around that time, she acted like a storm was coming and the reaction she has when there is thunder outside,” he said on Facebook.

Nancy Taylor said she heard a large bang.

“My house shook, and dishes rattled. My husband even ran outside to look around,” she said on Facebook.

United States Geological Survey officials says there are infrequent earthquakes throughout most of North America east of the Rocky Mountains.

“Here and there earthquakes are more numerous… earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains, although less frequent than in the West, are typically felt over a much broader region than earthquakes of similar magnitude in the west,” United States Geological Survey officials say.

“East of the Rockies, an earthquake can be felt over an area more than ten times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the west coast. Most earthquakes in North America east of the Rockies occur as faulting within bedrock, usually miles deep.”
