Heat wave begins across the region

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning, as the first heat event of the season is beginning today.

Environment Canada officials say temperatures are expected to reach at least 32 degrees today and Monday with overnight lows near 22 degrees, providing little relief from the heat during this timeframe. It is appearing more likely that these heat conditions will persist into Tuesday.

Temperatures will fall below heat warning criteria by the middle of this week.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit issued a heat warning of their own on Friday.

Environment Canada officials remind people to watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

“Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place,” Environment Canada officials said.

“Seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, swimming pool, shower or bath, or air-conditioned spot like a public building. Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.”
