Quality Detasseling Contractors (QDC) is set to hire over 100 corn detasselers and leaders in the Wallaceburg, Dresden and surrounding areas this summer.
Mike Scollard, owner of the company, QDC has employed 1000’s of students in the area over the last 30 years.
“One of the key reasons for our long term success is that we have always really valued the people who work with us,” Scollard said.
“Whether you are new to detasseling or have some experience, our higher pay and bonus program rewards ambitious young workers. It’s great seeing people come back year after year at a higher pay rate.”
Scollard added there are also opportunities available to take on leadership positions.
“As students gain experience they can start training and leading others, and get a pay raise as well,” he said.
“For many young people it’s their first real leadership position. And it’s valuable experience to have for other jobs.”
Detasselers need to be at least 13-years-old to register and leaders must be a minimum of 17-18 yrs old and have at least two years of detasseling experience.
QDC also has a profit sharing program for higher level leaders where students can earn a substantial amount of money in a short period of time to help pay for their continuing education.
“We’ve had a lot of young people take advantage of this program over the years,” Scollard said.
“It’s helped quite a few students pay their way through college and university. And they all started out with us detasseling.”
The season will begin somewhere between July 10 and July 15 and the work will carry on well into August this year.
Exact dates depend on growing conditions between now and July.
Scollard said although weather does play a big role in how the season unfolds, a typical day is six to eight hours.
“On hot days it’s best to wrap it up a bit earlier,” he said.
“It also helps motivate young people to come back out the next day too.”
QDC has eight pick up locations and numerous buses operating throughout the area, including Bothwell and Thamesville, so there’s one close to everyone.
