Fishing Derby kicks off Canada Day festivities (Photos)

As it does every Canada Day, the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 18 in Wallaceburg kick started the day’s events with their annual Kid’s Fishing Derby.

Gord Heath, the organizer of the event, told the Sydenham Current a lot of work goes into holding the event year after year.

“We start a year ahead,” he said.

“We go around and we get donations from everybody. We have people that donate four bikes, EMC Cement, Jamie McDougall Construction, the Ladie’s Auxiliary at the Wallaceburg Legion and the Men’s Euchre Club. I get money donated by the Legion, the Kinsmen Club, Knights of Pythias and we go and buy all the gifts. Canadian Tire also donates a big prize. We give two trophies away, one for the most fish and for the biggest fish.”

Heath added: “We have a lot of kids with happy faces.”

The participants all get a hot-dog, pop, bag of chips, Tim Bits and McDonald’s fries as well, Heath said.
