Suspect stopped at the Canada/U.S. border

A Walpole Island man was stopped at the Canada/U.S. border and arrested on outstanding warrants.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say on May 22, a man was allegedly being confrontational with a younger male in the area of a basketball park in Wallaceburg.

The witness, who observed this happening, stepped in between the man and the younger male in an attempt to stop the argument.

As a result, the witness was allegedly assaulted by the man and suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police were called, however, the whereabouts of the man were unknown and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On May 24, the man turned himself in at the police station.

He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

He was later released with a court date of June 13, 2017.

The man allegedly did not appear at court on that date.

Therefore, another warrant was issued for his arrest for failing to attend court.

Early this morning around 12 a.m., the man was stopped prior to crossing the Ambassador Bridge by Canada Border Services.

A 19-year-old Walpole Island man was arrested and charged for failing to attend court.

He was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters and later released with a court date of August 16, 2017.
