Satans bringing senior lacrosse back to Wallaceburg

Senior lacrosse is making another comeback in Wallaceburg, and is set to be featured locally on WAMBO weekend.

The Wallaceburg Satans will be joining the Box Lacrosse League (BLL) this season, and will be the first Canadian team in the field.

“The league consists of teams in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis (Circle City), St. Louis, and of course Wallaceburg,” Chris Fox, a former Wallaceburg Red Devil, college lacrosse player and the founder of the new Satans squad, told the Sydenham Current.

“Our roster will be made up of player predominately from Wallaceburg, with strong support from Sarnia. There has also been interest from London and Windsor. My cousin, Jason Fox, has been huge asset in helping get everything organized, especially on the player personal standpoint.”

Fox said he has been in contact with members of the league on and off for about two years.

“A few of my college teammates have played in the league and I’ve grown to know and work with some of the other owners/operators of the other teams,” he said.

“The team will be playing out of Wallaceburg Memorial Arena. Because the league schedule is based on weekend showcases – four teams embarking on one city and playing two games, our only opportunity to host is WAMBO weekend.”

The 2017 BLL Regular Season starts-off with their ‘Showcase Weekend’ in Wallaceburg on August 12 and 13.

“We are the first Canadian team in the league and the other franchises are excited to have us,” Fox said.

“With the excitement and the dynamic of ice being put-in the arena at the end of August, those two factors combined allows us to host the first weekend of games.”

Fox said the Satans were not created to replace, the now-defunct Wallaceburg Thrashers squad, “but to give the large group of 18, 19, 20, and 21 plus players a place to play.

“This is a very different dynamic and setup (compared to the Thrashers.) We have an enormous amount of talent for a town our size. It’s only fitting that those players have some place to play. Those whom I’ve talked to, and of course I advocate that this structure, playing late summer and fall, provides a great opportunity to allow these players the opportunity to coach and give back to Minor Lacrosse and then focus on a short playing season once the kids wrap up,” Fox said.

He said it provides a unique opportunity to introduce the town of Wallaceburg to people from major U.S. cities.

“It gives our guys a chance to travel one weekend a month to world class sports cities,” Fox said.

“This team also rekindles Wallaceburg’s rich history of competing against U.S. teams and being ambassadors to the sport of box lacrosse.”

Fox said interested players can still inquire about joining the team.

“Any player interested is encouraged to contact Jason Fox or myself, where we will then include them to our prospect list,” he said.

“We suggest doing this as soon as possible if anyone is interested in playing. From the list we will extend invitations for roster sports and if need be tryouts during practice sessions leading into our August weekend. We will be carrying a large roster as we know some players are only able to make certain weekends due to family and work commitments.”

Fox said he is encouraging the community to come check out the festivities at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena on WAMBO weekend.

“The community, lacrosse fans, and anyone interested in supporting the team can do so by coming to our Showcase Weekend August 12 and 13,” he said.

“We will be celebrating WAMBO and lacrosse all weekend with food and beverages. People looking to volunteer can contact me. We will also provide very reasonable advertising and sponsorship packages for those who want to reconnect with Wallaceburg and lacrosse history.”

Tickets are now on sale to purchase in advance and people will receive $1 off and can be purchased online.
