Back-to-School tips for your oral health
Are you ready for the early morning back-to-school routines?
Chatham-Kent Public Health has five simple tips to help parents ensure their children’s oral care habits make the grade.
– Brush and floss daily. Brush at least twice a day for two minutes each time using fluoridated toothpaste. Use a rice size amount of fluoridated toothpaste if your child is not spitting out the toothpaste. Help your child floss at least once per day to remove the plaque between teeth using either a floss stick or regular floss.
– Pack a healthy lunch. Crunchy fruit and vegetables such as celery and apples are great snacks that also remove plaque from teeth. Avoid sticky, sugary foods like raisins or candy. It is also great to have fresh fruit and vegetables cleaned and ready for a quick after school snack.
– Drink tap water. Water flushes food particles from your mouth to help prevent cavities. Kids should drink tap water and limit sugary drinks such as juice and pop. Add a reusable water bottle to your back to school shopping list, as most schools have bottle filling stations in them.
– Wear sports mouth guards. Physical sports can damage children’s teeth. Mouth guards can reduce injuries to the teeth, tongue, lips and cheek.
– Visit your dental office regularly. Dental health professionals can fix issues before they become problems. They also clean your teeth and answer questions you may have.
Chatham Kent Public Health offers assistance if you or someone you know cannot pay for a child’s dental treatment. Healthy Smiles Ontario is a program for FREE dental work for children 17 and younger. Call 519-355-1071 ext. 5700 or visit www.ckpublichealth.com.
