OPP: Multiple speeding charges laid on the 401

Over the weekend, the Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received 36 calls for service in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

OPP officials say there were various calls for service consisting of traffic complaints, traffic enforcement, traffic hazards, R.I.D.E., drug enforcement and marine.

Following too close

Police officials say on August 19 at around 8:25 a.m., Chatham-Kent OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 401 near Merlin Road.

Police say the complainant advised they were traveling eastbound through the construction zone when the vehicle behind them allegedly began ‘tailgating’ them. While passing by the emergency stopping area, within the construction zone, the following vehicle then passed the complainants vehicle.

The vehicle was stopped as it exited the construction zone.

As a result, the 30-year-old male driver from La Salle, Ontario was charged with speeding and careless driving, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

Tractor trailer caught going 105 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone

Police say on August 19 at around 10:45 a.m., a Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was conducting RADAR enforcement, in the construction zone, on Highway 401 near Charing Cross Road when they observed an eastbound tractor trailer allegedly exceeding the posted speed limit of 80 km/hr.

The RADAR registered a speed in excess of 105 km/hr, police say.

The vehicle was stopped and while speaking with the driver the officer found the driver had failed to maintain their log book and was in excess of their on duty hours.

As a result, the 49-year-old male driver of Brampton, Ontario was charged with speeding, fail to maintain daily log and drive after 14 hours on duty in a day, all contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

Woman caught going 170 km/hr on the 401

Police say on August 19 at around 7:30 p.m. a member of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting RADAR enforcement on highway 401 near Charing Cross Road when they observed a westbound vehicle allegedly exceed the posted speed limit of 100 km/hr.

The RADAR registered a speed in excessive of 170 km/hr, police say.

As a result, the driver, a 27-year-old woman of Mexico has been charged with race motor vehicle – excessive speed, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

She will appear in Ontario Court of Justice on September 13, 2017 to answer to the charge.

The driver’s licence has been suspended and the vehicle impounded for a period of seven days, as per statute.

50 km/hr over the limit

Police officials say on August 21 at around 6:30 a.m. a member of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting RADAR enforcement on Kent Bridge Road when they observed a northbound motor vehicle allegedly exceed the posted speed limit of 80 km/hr.

The RADAR registered a speed in excessive of 130 km/hr, police say.

As a result, the driver, a 37-year-old Howard Township man, has been charged with race motor vehicle – excessive speed, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

He will appear in Ontario Court of Justice on September 27, 2017 to answer to the charge.

The driver’s licence has been suspended and the vehicle impounded for a period of seven days, as per statute.
