Fire destroys vacant home in Merlin

A vacant home was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say on August 27, just after midnight, police and fire services attended a residence on Talbot Trail in regards to a detached garage fully engulfed in flames.

Prior to police arrival, the fire had spread to the residence and it was unknown at that time if there were occupants inside.

With the help of a citizen, police were able to rescue a dog from inside the residence, as well as ensure the house was empty.

Police later were able to confirm that the house was in fact vacant at the time of the fire.

The damage is estimated at $175,000.

The cause of the fire was deemed not suspicious.
